Custom URL shorteners are handy branding tools when in the midst of a digital campaign. As a digital agency, we thought, “Why not us?” Today, we’re proud to announce the launch of JDMr.co–the official branded URL shortener of JDM Digital.
Custom URL shorteners, also known as vanity URL shorteners, private URL shorteners and private label URL shorteners, are powerful tools that both serve the purpose of tracking/reporting, adhere to [tooltip content="Where character-limits are tight." url="" ]social media best practices[/tooltip] and, perhaps more importantly, they help maintain your branding when in the midst of an online marketing or social media campaign.
Free URL shortening services like bit.ly, owl.y and TinyURL have been around for years. Google has even gotten in on the action with their (well-named) goo.gl. But, when we saw other, smaller brands like SearchEngineLand using their own, branded URL shortener (selnd.com), we just had to ask ourselves: “Why not JDM?”

The official URL Shortener of JDM
Today, we’re announcing that we’ve got the technology built, tested and ready to be [tooltip content="Stands for Repurposeable Markup, but it just means: Ready to be rolled out for a client quickly and inexpensively." url="" ]RE-MARKed[/tooltip]. Our version, JDMr.co, is already up, running and tracking our social media marketing campaigns.
Shameless News readers are welcome to head over to JDMr.co, and click on “About” in the main nav for screenshots of what the admin looks like and its reporting capabilities.
Now I know we’ve been a little hard on URL shorteners in the past (calling them Wolves in Sheep’s Clothing), but that’s exactly WHY a branded URL shortener can be so powerful. I may trust your brand enough to click your link, but if you’re using bit.ly or another generic URL shortener–who knows where you’re actually taking me!
You’re a Digital Agency. Why Should I Care About Branded URL Shorteners?!
Well, for starters they just look cool. That said, from a branding perspective, it makes a lot of sense to have a URL that more closely relates to your brand name rather than a generic one like “tinyurl.com.” Also, a branded URL shortener should allow you to more closely track clickthroughs, integrate with your existing website (particularly if its a CMS) and helps build a cohesive, 21st century brand identity.
The search engine implications of using your own domain name URL shortener are unclear, but they can’t be any worse than using someone else’s, right? That’s why we decided to roll this out for ourselves first and monitor the SEO data closely. We’ll update this post as data rolls in.
How to Get Started Building Your Own URL Shortener
Like any website, the first step is finding a short, but branded domain name available for purchase. Get creative with the new and exotic domain name extensions available. Domainr is a fun idea generator, but you’ll have to search a domain name registrar to find which are actually avaliable for purchase and [tooltip content="Some exotic domain name extentions are really expensive." url="" ]for how much[/tooltip]. Gandi is a great place to purchase obscure domain name extensions.
Once you’ve got your new crazy-short domain name figured out, all you need is the URL shortening technology. Try searching CodeCanyon.net or contact JDM for a demo of our technology and one-time pricing for us to roll it out for you.
